How it works
From sign-up sheets to Givebutter in three steps.
01
Collect
Import an old spreadsheet, or send the form to whoever holds the contacts.
02
Complete
One person per row. Typos in emails, phone numbers in the wrong format and country names are highlighted.
03
Download and import
Download the CSV and import it in Givebutter under Contacts, Import, before importing any of their donations.
Why use a form?
Givebutter quietly drops what it can't read.
An address missing its city or country is deleted, a country written as "United States" isn't accepted, and Excel strips the leading zero from ZIP codes in New England and New Jersey. None of it is obvious until the contacts are already in.
A form checks each contact as it's entered, so the list arrives ready to import.
Country names instead of codes
Country takes a 2- or 3-letter code, such as US or USA.
ZIP codes losing their zeros
Kept as text, so 02134 stays 02134.
Phone numbers in the wrong shape
International numbers need + and the country code, with no spaces.

How Givebutter imports contacts
Givebutter imports contacts from a CSV or Excel file. In the dashboard, open Contacts, click Import and upload the file, then confirm how its columns map to Givebutter's fields. You can download a template there too, which includes any custom fields you've created.
Each contact needs a first and last name, an email or a phone number. Whenever the file has emails, it needs an Email Subscription Status column: yes subscribes the contact to your emails, no leaves them unsubscribed. Addresses are all or nothing, so a contact with a ZIP code but no street or city loses the whole address.
Country takes a 2- or 3-letter code rather than a name. US phone numbers can be written with or without dashes or parentheses, while international numbers start with + and the country code with no spaces. Dates of birth use MM/DD/YYYY, and tags are separated by commas.
Givebutter finds existing contacts by first and last name plus a matching email or phone number. Someone imported with a different spelling of their name, or with neither detail matching, becomes a second contact, so keep names and emails consistent with what's already in Givebutter. Import contacts before their donations, so each gift finds its donor.
